Understanding Trading Accounts
Learn about the different types of trading accounts and when to use each one.
Account Types
1. Manual Entry Accounts
Best for:
- Traders who prefer manual journaling
- Users who don't want broker integration
- Quick trade entry during the day
How it works:
- Create trades using the Quick Add form
- Full control over every field
- No external connections needed
Capabilities:

Create one:
- Go to Settings → Accounts → Add Account
- Choose Manual Entry
- Enter a nickname and your preferred settings
- Done!
2. Connected Broker (Auto-Sync)
Best for:
- Traders who want automated journaling
- Users with supported brokers
- Set-it-and-forget-it workflow
How it works:
- Connect using broker credentials (API key, OAuth, or Flex token)
- TradeRonin syncs trades automatically
- Daily or on-demand sync available
Capabilities:
- ✅ Auto-sync trades
- ✅ Manual sync on demand
- ✅ Upload files (if broker supports)
- ❌ Quick add (trades come from broker)
Create one:
- Go to Settings → Accounts → Add Account
- Choose Connected Broker
- Select your broker
- Choose Auto-Sync
- Enter credentials
- Enable auto-sync if desired
3. Upload-Based Accounts
Best for:
- Brokers without API access
- Historical data import
- One-time or periodic manual uploads
How it works:
- Create an account linked to a broker
- Upload CSV or XML files manually
- TradeRonin parses and imports trades

Create one:
- Go to Settings → Accounts → Add Account

Managing Multiple Accounts
You can create multiple accounts for:
- Different brokers (e.g., Tradovate + Interactive Brokers)
- Live vs. paper trading accounts
- Different strategies or timeframes
Switching accounts: Use the account selector in the top navigation. Each account has its own trades, stats, and settings.
Security & Privacy
- Broker credentials are encrypted using AES-256-GCM
- Passwords are never stored (we use API keys/tokens only)
- You can disconnect anytime without losing trade data
- Row-level security ensures you only see your own accounts
FAQs
Can I change account types later? No, but you can create a new account and migrate trades.
Can I have multiple accounts from the same broker? Yes! This is useful for separating live and paper accounts.
What happens if I disconnect a broker?
- Existing trades remain in your journal

- You can reconnect anytime
Can I manually add trades to a connected account? Not directly, but you can create a separate manual entry account for additional trades.
